The University of South Dakota offers a range of nursing education programs that provide an excellent foundation for a career in nursing. Nursing students at USD are able to choose from Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees that prepare them for a wide variety of healthcare roles. In addition to traditional, on-campus courses, the school also provides online nursing programs that allow students to work at their own pace. The BSN program at USD combines theoretical coursework with practical experience in order to prepare students for a rewarding career in nursing practice. Through the coursework, students learn about nursing foundations, principles of management, health care informatics, leadership roles, and evidence-based practice. During the clinical component of the program, students gain field experience in various clinical settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community health settings. The MSN program is designed to enhance an individual’s clinical knowledge and skillset and focuses on topics such as health promotion, public policy advocacy, research, advanced care coordination, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. Students enter into one of three concentrations, such as family nurse practitioner, nurse educator, or nurse leader. The program culminates in a capstone project that allows students to demonstrate their mastery of the material and skills learned throughout the program. USD’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program focuses on expanded leadership roles, evidence-based practice, administrative practice, and teaching and learning. This is a terminal degree program in nursing and prepares graduates for full-time practice in the field. DNP students have the opportunity to complete a variety of specialization tracks, including adult gerontology acute care, primary care family nurse practitioner, and nursing executive leadership.
