Nursing Education at Onondaga Community College (OCC) is designed to provide students with comprehensive training that will prepare them for a successful career in the nursing field. OCC offers several degree programs that include Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees in Practical Nursing and Registered Nursing, as well as Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Nursing Leadership and Nursing Management. The AAS in Practical Nursing program provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to practice nursing in the acute care setting. Students learn the principles of nursing care and will be prepared to work in a variety of health care facilities. Courses include basic concepts of nursing and pharmacology, fundamentals of critical care, medical-surgical nursing, mental health nursing, and maternity nursing. The AAS in Registered Nursing program focuses on providing students with the tools and experience to become successful registered nurses. Students learn to assess, diagnose and treat medical conditions, develop communication and problem solving skills, and use evidence-based practice to help in the delivery of quality patient care. The BS in Nursing Leadership and Nursing Management degrees are designed to equip students with the skills needed to lead and manage nursing organizations. Courses in this program focus on leadership and managerial roles, health systems management, and healthcare policy.
