Madison Area Technical College (MATC) offers a variety of nursing degrees and certificate programs so students can pursue a career in the field of nursing. The college offers associate degree programs in Practical Nursing and Associate of Science in Nursing, while also providing a certificate program in Practical Nursing. The Practical Nursing program provides students with the skills and knowledge to work as a nurse’s assistant in a variety of health care settings. Students will learn about issues related to elderly, disabled and chronically ill patients, as well as how to observe, document and report on a patient’s condition. Additionally, the program will cover medical terminology and pharmacology, as well as the ethical and legal aspects of nursing. The Associate of Science in Nursing program provides students with the opportunity to become a registered nurse (RN). Upon completion of this program, students can apply for a license to practice nursing and provide primary care for individuals throughout their lifespan. This degree program includes coursework in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, but also incorporates specialty courses in management, critical care, and community health nursing. The Practical Nursing Certificate program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic nursing care to patients in a variety of settings. In addition to completing the program, students must take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. At MATC, students will have access to modern labs and equipment, and will benefit from the college’s partnerships with local clinics and hospitals. MATC also has an active Student Nurses Association which provides support, resources, and activities for its members.
