Johnston Community College offers an extensive range of nursing education programs to meet the needs of a diverse group of students. Nursing education at Johnston Community College is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for successful careers in nursing. The college offers Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Practical Nursing (PN) programs that are approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. In addition to the ADN and PN programs, Johnston Community College also offers several other programs related to nursing including the Nursing Care Technician Certificate Program and the Nursing Education Certificate Program. The college’s ADN and PN programs are both two-year courses of study which prepare students to become registered nurses. With both programs, students learn the theoretical foundations of nursing care in addition to gaining valuable hands-on experience. In the program, students will learn about medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, health assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, patient care, and communication. In addition, students also gain experience in clinical practice through lab classes and clinical rotations. In the Nursing Care Technician Certificate Program, students learn how to provide basic patient care services under the supervision of a registered nurse. Topics covered include patient assessment, safety and infection control, vital signs and body measurements, medication administration, therapeutic communication, and patient-centered care. Students who successfully complete this program earn a certificate that demonstrates mastery of skills to provide quality patient care. In the Nursing Education Certificate Program, students learn the theories and techniques needed to be an effective nursing educator. Courses cover topics such as teaching strategies, curriculum design, course delivery methods, assessment and evaluation, and leadership in nursing education. With this certification, graduates are prepared to work as nursing educators in a variety of settings.
